Welcome
to Our Site
We welcome you to our site. Our mission is to promote history, empower people and revitalize communities. To restore and preserve Rosenwald Schools, our rich legacies and histories, as well as that of former Colored Schools, of which played a significant role in the formalization of education in North Carolina.
Our first organization of these efforts started under "Spectrum for Living Self-Help Outreach of Snow Hill/Greene County, Inc." It was incorporated on October 19, 1992, by JoAnn Artis Stevens and Willard Ray Stevens founders. Mr. James Williams Jr. of Snow Hill embraced our vision and agreed to serve with us in this amazing undertaking.
Our quest was and remains to preserve and utilize the Colored School, Greene County Training School/South Greene High and the now Rosenwald Memorial (South Greene) Ball Field as catalyst for economic development purposes in the uplift of the West Harper Street and surrounding areas. The schools were in part abandoned and we obtained the go ahead from then Greene County Board of Education's Superintendent Dr. Steven Mazingo to clean up the gym, establish office space in the Colored School and begin the process of stabilization. We gained support from our communities and local governments along with letters of support. After learning the Colored School was a Washington/Rosenwald School, we reorganized under the name Rosenwald Center for Cultural Enrichment, which was later incorporated in 2004.

Historic Perspective
Insights and perspectives
These efforts honor the transformative legacy of our forefathers and the original School and education program of Booker T. Washington, which was supported by Julius Rosenwald establishing a fund to support them. These efforts provided vital educational access to African American children throughout the south. We strive to Right History. Much of the history and trajectories of North Carolina, roots spring from what was once called "Contentnea". Our Best Chapel School was situated off Best Chapel School Road, connecting to Nooherooka Road in Greene County, N.C..
